Join Baunti Tours for the Norfolk Island Penal Settlement 1825 200 Year Celebration. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the commencement of the Second British Settlement on Friday 6 June 2025.

Following the Polynesian Settlement, which lasted several hundred years, and the British Colonial Settlement which ended in 1814, an 1824 government report into crime in New South Wales proposed a settlement for repeat offenders. Norfolk Island was selected due to its capabilities as a self-sufficient penal settlement. Consequently, a colony was re-established on 6 June 1825. The plan was for the island to accommodate serious convicts, and it became known for harsh conditions. This period is well-documented in Norfolk’s history. The island gained notoriety for its treatment of prisoners.

Experience the historic and picturesque environment of the world-heritage listed Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area. Participate in an in-depth historic tour of the site and visit the Norfolk Island Museums.  The site tour, led by local historians specializing in the convict era, will provide an informative look into the convict settlement on Norfolk Island. Refreshments will be provided at one of the historic landmarks in the Kingston area.
